----Eric McKinley----
Hey America: If you don't cater to the gay community, then we'll sue you...until we get our way.

I ran in the AIDS walk here in L.A...ok, I walked in the AIDS walk here. I live in one of if not, the most liberal state in the country. I have gay friends who I love dearly and feel if they want to get married, they should have just as much of a right to be in a miserable marriage as a straight person. I mean really, straight people these days seem to have more respect for picking which HDTV to buy than they do for whom they marry. So I was less than thrilled when Prop 8 passed here in Cali as where many of my friends...some of whom participated in the march (the PEACEFUL one) in West Hollywood. I tell you this just so you know where I stand on gay rights etc...

So back in 2005 a gay man in New Jersey, Eric McKinley, filed a complaint with the New Jersey Attorney Generals offices complaining that the dating website eHarmony, was discriminating against homosexuals by not offering to match up men with men or women with women. Now if I were gay and wanted to get set up with someone, I would probably go to one of the many gay dating websites that are out there. And there are plenty...but Eric decided that he wanted to 'take a stand' so he filed the complaint. It's now been some 3 years since the initial complaint and eHarmony just agreed to give in to the demands of this guy to avoid what would likely be a costly and long trial. So they have to not only pay all of the state's Attorney fees, pay Eric $5,000, create an entirely new site catering to homosexuals and give away 10,000 free memberships, but they have to add pictures of same sex couples to their 'diversity' page. Just in case you were wondering, eHarmony is a PRIVATELY owned company.

So in other words, if you want something or some service from a company that doesn't presently offer said service, file a lawsuit. One of my best friends is a Jew who keeps kosher. We used to have to limit where we went to eat because she needs all her food to come from a kosher kitchen and since our favorite sushi place does not maintain one, we're gonna sue!

More examples? Let's say I really want a date, but the site I want to use mypartner.com. So I went there and signed up for an account but when I went to select that I was woman looking for a man....it doesn't have that option!! How DARE THEY! I'm suing! Or how about if I have a male friend who wants to join 'Curves' gym?. Or how about my ex-boyfriend who has a nut allergy and goes to a restaurant that uses nuts in some of their dishes making it unsafe for him to eat anything from there? HOW DARE THEY! It should be noted that in all these cases, no one is told, "GO AWAY, WE DON'T SERVE YOUR KIND" they are told, "COME ON IN BUT WHAT WE HAVE ON OUR MENU IS WHAT WE HAVE ON OUR MENU" and if you don't like it, feel free to not give is your business. Why is this any different to what eHarmony is doing?

In the wake of this eHarmony suit, there is now another suit being filed against eHarmony in California by a lesbian woman claiming the same thing. Is this what our country has come to? Suing privately held companies that don't cater to every persons wants and needs?

The recent passing of Prop 8 in California and the events that unfolded after that, further lead me to believe that the vocal majority of the gay community is not interested in becoming accepted by society but wants to alienate as many people as possible by using their violent and unfair practices of intimidation and threats to get their way.

Just a couple weeks ago, a private business owner was left a threatening message on his answering machine (hear the message or read the transcript of it, here. Isn't that called blackmail or something? Why not treat every voter like this? Probably because we live in a democracy and even though sometimes things don't seem fair, it was a vote and the majority won and using threats of violence and promises to destroy someones business because of how they voted on a totally unrelated topic is what pathetic, attention seeking, ill-meaning people do. So congratulations Eric et al...you have just alienated many people who were your biggest supporters, by showing just how little you care about anyone else's rights.
