Week 17
----Tom Cruise----
I mean Dr. Tom Cruise, Operating Thetan, OT VIII.
If you haven't already seen/heard.... Well no, that's not possible, you have to have heard at least SOMETHING about
Tom Cruise...or more likely something FROM Tom Cruise himself...seeing as how he's been a bit "vocal" lately. Vocal about what? Well let's see....
in the last few weeks he's told everyone, including Oprah, that he's MADLY in love with his girlfriend/now fiancé of two months,
Katie Holmes and if you don't believe him, he'll
jump on your furniture
and nearly mal you to death
(just ask Miss Winfrey).
He wants everyone (and Matt Lauer) to know that he's, "...just living [his] life..." which must be something
new to him because he repeats that statement about five times in one interview. He's told us all about his current movie 'War of the
Worlds'...ok, so these are all relatively uncontroversial topics so why is he the Spinner of the Week? Well it stems from
his recent 'Today Show' interview with Matt Lauer and his spun completely out of control, Scientologist based, 'thoughts', on medicine and psychiatry.
Now I knew a bit about it but I began to really research into Tom's 'religion' of Scientology to get some background on the subject but honestly, the
'religion' is made up of so much spin and double-talk that Scientology itself would make for it's own Spin of the Year.
And I put 'religion' in quotes because even defining it as such is a bunch of spin even according to Tom himself:
Cruise: You know, Scientology is something that you don't understand. It's like, you could be a Christian and be a Scientologist, okay. Scientology is something—
Lauer: So, it doesn't replace religion.
Cruise: It is a religion. Because it's dealing with the spirit. You as a spiritual being. It gives you tools you can use to apply to your life.
Now if you don't know anything about Scientology then I'd suggest reading a concise explanation of sorts, many of which are
available for free...OR....of course you can pay for the information by purchasing one of the many books offered by the church itself, and if
you REALLY want to know more (and seeing as how most (sane) people would agree that Scientology is more of a cult than a religion) then
by the time you've finished reading the books you'll want to jump right into the religion which will of course cost you....and depending
on how many 'auditing' sessions you want, how high up on the 'worship me' scale you want to be and how many roman numerals you want (note the OT VIII after Tom's name in the title of this page), you can go ahead and join the
church which can cost you anywhere from the thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars....and when you run out of money, well, you'll have to find
a cheaper way of enlightening yourself.
And given the amount of money it takes to belong and 'rise up' in Scientology, it shouldn't be any
big surprise that many 'celebrities' join the church (they even have their own "Church of Scientology Celebrity Centre" which lucky for me is about 5 minutes from my house). In addition to Tom
other 'celebrity Scientologists include John Travolta,
Kirstie Alley,
Juliette Lewis,
Isaac Hayes,
Greta Van Susteren,
Jenna Elfman...
and the list goes on, and to be honest with you, I'm actually sad that I read on because finding out that Bart Simpson (Aka Nancy Cartwright) is
a Scientologist, makes me watch 'The Simpson's' in a new and uncomfortable light...:(
And sadly it seems the cult is about to welcome it's newest member which would of course be Tom's soon to be third ex-wife Katie Holmes. Furthermore, it seems Katie wasn't even his first choice for a new beau, just the most clueless, because before meeting Katie the Church sent out Tom to recruit other (and apparently more intelligent) young Hollywood actors, namely Scarlett Johansson.
OK, so back to why Tom is really the Spin of the Week.... I mentioned above, the 'Today Show' interview with
Matt Lauer. If you'd like to watch the clip,
here ya go...(just click on the free vid), or just go ahead and read
the transcript.
Now after talking about how happy he is, and how wonderful life is, and how he doesn't care what the 'media' and 'cynics' says about
him, yada yada yada....and after he gives us a real 'in-depth' look into what Scientology is (my eyes would be rolling right about here), he
launches into a lively discussion of various health problems/issues. It all starts when Matt asks Tom to clarify something that he had said
about Brooke Shields and her use of medication to treat her postpartum depression and really, it's about at this point in the interview
when my mouth just sort of drops open because until that point I had no idea that Tom Cruise had managed to become an expert in the
field of medicine all while filming movies and praying to Xenu (or whatever the god thing is that Scientologists pray to).
Now incase you didn't watch or read the video or transcripts, here's a portion of the relevant (to this spin of the week) part:
Cruise: I've never agreed with psychiatry, ever. Before I was a Scientologist I never agreed with psychiatry. And when I started studying the history of psychiatry, I understood more and more why I didn't believe in psychology. And as far as the Brooke Shields thing, look, you got to understand, I really care about Brooke Shields. I think, here's a wonderful and talented woman. And I want to see her do well. And I know that psychiatry is a pseudo science.
Lauer: But Tom, if she said that this particular thing helped her feel better, whether it was the antidepressants or going to a counselor or psychiatrist, isn't that enough?
Cruise: Matt, you have to understand this. Here we are today, where I talk out against drugs and psychiatric abuses of electric shocking people, okay, against their will, of drugging children with them not knowing the effects of these drugs. Do you know what Aderol[sic] is? Do you know Ritalin? Do you know now that Ritalin is a street drug? Do you understand that?
Lauer: The difference is —
Cruise: No, no, Matt.
Lauer: This wasn't against her will, though.
Cruise: Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt —
Lauer: But this wasn't against her will.
Cruise: Matt, I'm asking you a question.
Lauer: I understand there's abuse of all of these things.
Cruise: No, you see. Here's the problem. You don't know the history of psychiatry. I do.
Lauer: Aren't there examples, and might not Brooke Shields be an example, of someone who benefited from one of those drugs?
Cruise: All it does is mask the problem, Matt. And if you understand the history of it, it masks the problem. That's what it does. That's all it does. You're not getting to the reason why. There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance.
Lauer: So, postpartum depression to you is kind of a little psychological gobbledygook —
Cruise: No. I did not say that.
Lauer: I'm just asking what you, what would you call it?
Cruise: No. No. Abso— Matt, now you're talking about two different things.
Lauer: But that's what she went on the antidepressant for.
Cruise: But what happens, the antidepressant, all it does is mask the problem. There's ways, [with] vitamins and through exercise and various things... I'm not saying that that isn't real. That's not what I'm saying. That's an alteration of what I'm saying. I'm saying that drugs aren't the answer, these drugs are very dangerous. They're mind-altering, antipsychotic drugs. And there are ways of doing it without that so that we don't end up in a brave new world. The thing that I'm saying about Brooke is that there's misinformation, okay. And she doesn't understand the history of psychiatry. She doesn't understand in the same way that you don't understand it, Matt.
OK, let me say a few things to Tom here:
In regard to the Adderall & Ritalin comment and that last statement there about using vitamins and exercise instead
... Yes Tom, I DO know both of those medications quite well. I suffered and struggled for 16 years before I was
correctly diagnosed (of course I was diagnosed by one of those people who, you know, call themselves "Dr's" and
spend a good portion of their lives researching what you obviously managed to study in-depth in your spare time
and now consider yourself an expert on) and put on Ritalin, and then about 6 years ago I switched the Adderall, so I'd say
I have a fairly intimate understanding of those drugs, but regardless I can guarantee that I know more about them and their
effects than you do. And just fyi, in all those 16 years of suffering I took plenty of vitamins and I exercised quite a bit...
I was an ice skater and was on my high school basketball and track team (now sure I sucked at hoops but I'm 5'2" and white)
and even after ALL that exercise and vitamin taking I still was not 'cured' by any remote definition of the word. Now, at 28 I
can tell you as a FACT that the 'evil' drugs that you speak of were the ONLY thing that worked.
I also find it disturbing that you seem to think that because a drug is 'abused' and used as a 'street drug' that that
somehow has ANYTHING AT ALL to do with the effectiveness of the drug? How in the name of Xenu do you even come to that conclusion?
But then I reminded that you Scientologists live in a delusional world and in case you need more proof, do you recall a few years
back when fellow church member and 'celeb' Jenna Elfman was asked to sign autographs for a Children with HIV charity auction?
Well she wanted nothing to do with it
and when asked why, she said she refused to "...support any organization that raised money for AIDS research or relief because 'AIDS is a state of mind, not a disease.'"
Well that sheds a bit of light and puts into perspective your views on anything, really, because it just goes to show that INDEED
you and the rest of your members are BRAINWASHED or plain old stupid....and I've got to tell you, the more I read about the religion
and it's views, I'm thinking it's a bit of both and that makes me sad Tom, because now I can never look at Maverick the same way :(
I also don't know what Tom Cruise thinks makes him such an expert in postpartum depression or ANY disease or condition, physical OR mental. But
asking him would be pointless because he'll rattle off a Scientology approved, spin-saturated answer that won't answer anything
except the question of his sanity or lack there of.
I almost feel bad for him because after all, he was brainwashed and all that silly factual information that he once retained has
now been replaced with spin, topped with spin, topped with spin...So I guess Col. Jessep (Aka Jack Nicholson) couldn't have
been more right when he told ole Tom that he
couldn't handle the truth...
